Title
"The Ideal Plastron" bust improver, 1905: Side view
Description
Side view of "The Ideal Plastron" bust improver from 1905. The boning used in this garment is made from a celluloid, an early form of plastic. This shows the foundationwear industry's interest in finding materials, other than the traditional whalebone and steel, which was lightweight and gave a garment with the necessary support.
There are thirteen detachable supports inside the main body of the garment, alongside four adjustable lengths of tape which could be moved to increase or decrease the size of curve. The shoulder and back straps are also adjustable.
The elastic tape attached to the bottom of the bust improver has a metal ring at the end. This would have been attached to the busk stud of a corset in order to hold the garment in place.
