Title
Back supporting bodice, 1905
Description
This back supporting bodice from around 1905 was designed to alleviate the common complaint of upper back pain and help prevent shoulder stooping.

Forty-eight flat steels provide the wearer with the necessary support, alongside a further four steels which support the back lacing. The garment is made of white cotton and would have been worn over a camisole or bust bodice.

The bodice has extended shoulder straps, each of which has fourteen eyelet holes and an inset of suspender elastic. There are heavy brass hooks located at the front of the bodice. These would be inserted into the eyelet holes in order to hold the bodice firmly in place around the shoulders.
