Title
L1038 - Contractors' 0-4-0 saddletank locomotive, ABERDEEN.
Description
L1038 - Manning Wardle & Co. 'F' class 0-4-0 saddletank, ABERDEEN, No. 1014 of 1887. According to S. W. A. Newton's own notes, the photograph was taken at Loughborough when working on Contract No. 2 (East Leake to Aylestone) between 1894 and 1899. This section of the railway was built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton. Behind the locomotive is a wooden water tower, suggesting that this is the contractor's yard. The driver stands on the footplate behind the spectacle plate, while the fireman stands on the front buffer beam.
