The Northgates train crash occurred on Saturday 24th September, 1949. Due to a lapse in concentration from the signalman, a goods train struck an oncoming locomotive, derailing it and causing it to crash into the back garden of 47B Northgate Street. Miraculously, nobody was seriously hurt in the crash.
In this photograph, a steam-driven crane is being used to lift the locomotive from the road beneath the viaduct.
