Description
Back view of a black front busk corset of 1875, of lasting, cotton twill, and Hessian. It is laced at the back and has a straight, four-stud, metal busk at the front.
The metal busk was invented in 1840 and signalled a change from the simply shaped, detachable strips of bone or horn used in previous centuries. It was not until the 1860s that the metal busk fastening became generally used in Britain. This corset also has a double busk, a covered wide steel stitched underneath the busk to give extra support.
This corset is decorated with quilted machine stitching in amber coloured cotton, epitomising the skill of the workers who manipulated the corsets through the sewing machine. The decorative fan motifs have been stitched by hand. The corset is edged with deep black lace and narrow white lace around the top edge.
