Title
L1570 - Steam shovel and navvies at Brackley Station Yard, Northamptonshire
Description
L1570 - 'Steam navvy, Brackley Station Yard', Northamptonshire (S.W.A. Newton's notes). The photograph was taken around 1897, and it illustrates that despite the use of steam powered machinery, large numbers of men and horses were still required for the Railway's construction. The engines wooden cab, although a fairly tidy example, is a contractor's modification, built to afford the men inside some shelter from the elements. This section of the Line (Contract No.5 Woodford to Brackley) was built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne.
