Title
L3420 - Full steam ahead! Construction work in a cutting near Wembley Park
Description
L3420 - This busy scene shows work taking place near Wembley Park. Construction of a cutting is nearly complete - a steam excavator can be seen levelling its base, whilst tipping is removed by wagons on a contractors' railway. Massive retaining walls secure sides of the cutting, which once complete enclosed quadruple tracks of the Neasden to Northolt section of the Great Central Railway's 'alternative' route. Note the Metropolitan Tower visible amongst trees beyond the cutting. This large steel structure formed the first phase of an ambitious project undertaken by Edward Watkin designed to rival the Eiffel Tower. Construction was blighted by building difficulties, and doomed never to progress beyond the stage shown in this photograph.
