The Lichfield train crash occurred on New Year's day, 1946. Due to extremely cold weather freezing the point mechanisms, a goods train carrying fish was mistakenly diverted into the passing up loop, where it ran into the back of a stationary passenger train waiting at the station platform. 20 people were killed and another 21 injured.
