Title
L3528 - Work in progress at Newstead
Description
L3528 - The town of Newstead was the first settlement passed through by the London Extension after its start point at Annesley. This deep cutting, complete with tipping wagons and contractors' lines, represents construction of an underbridge designed to carry the permanent way alongside its' signal box, seen to the left of the frame. It is not clear why it was necessary to provide continued access either side of the new line - perhaps tracks dissected land under common ownership, or another transport route. A man stands at the top of the cutting enabling appreciation of its impressive scale.
