Title
L3140 - Bridge 423 - Lutterworth Station, Leicestershire
Description
L3140 - Bridge 423, the double span girder underbridge at the Great Central's Lutterworth Station. Just visible at the centre of the left abutment is the entrance to the staircase which took passengers up to the single island platform and station buildings. Lying on the ground in front of two laden tipping wagons is a boarded timber bridge centring: these were the temporary frames which were used to provide the shape of the brick arches on bridges, viaducts and culverts. Note the wagons on the embankment: they appear to have been fitted with a crude form of seating. Presumably, these ferried the navvies from their hutted accommodation to the construction site.
