The Northgates train crash occurred on Saturday 24th September, 1949. Due to a lapse in concentration from the signalman, a goods train struck an oncoming locomotive, derailing it and causing it to crash into the back garden of 47B Northgate Street. Miraculously, nobody was seriously hurt in the crash.

In this photograph, the train carriage has already been removed from the road below. A steam-driven crane is being used to help remove the rest of the vehicle.
