The Glenfield tunnel opened on 17th July 1832, making it one of the world's first underground railway routes, part of the Leicester and Swannington Railway. it was designed by George Stephenson, and built under supervision by his son, Robert. It was used to transport coal from the productive mines of NW Leicestershire into the city. The tunnel remained in use for over 130 years, before being sold in 1969. The tunnel, though unused, remains today and is looked after by heritage groups.
