Title
Diagonal seam corset by Charles Bayer, 1900
Description
Diagonal seam black sateen corset by Charles Bayer, 1900. Features complicated boning, a busk protector and retaining clasps, and hand stitched flossing.
This diagonal-seam corset in black sateen was designed to give a more pronounced figure line, as well as adding strength to the corset. The boning is very complicated and relies on three flat steels down the side seams of the garment, each of which has been reinforced with strips of whalebone. The closure on the busk is unusual as it not only features a busk protector, but also three retaining clasps to prevent it from opening.
The inside of the corset is lined with white mercerised drill and is stamped with several markings of the manufacturer, Charles Bayer. It is decorated with hand-stitched flossing and black lace.
