Title
Symington "Guaranteed" corset, 1885: Detail of lace
Description
Detail of lace from a Symington "Original Guaranteed Corset" produced in 1885. These corsets were guaranteed to last for twelve months and the company would "make good any defect which may occur during that time". This guarantee was shown by the label on the front of the corset and the company's trade mark is also stamped on the inside.

The corset is made from fawn coloured coutil, lined with white twill and interlined with stiffened hessian. It has a double busk which consists of a long, straight busk with an encased heavy, wide steel underneath. The corset is supported with ten vertical strips of string cording and whaleboning. Two strong, flat steels support the back lacing. The top of the corset is bound in pink cotton and is trimmed with cream lace.
