Title
L1019 - Contractors' 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive, H. LOVATT No. 1.
Description
L1019 - Hunslet Engine Co. 0-6-0 saddletank, H. LOVATT No. 1, (No. 57 of 1871). According to S. W. A. Newton's notes, the photo was taken 'in cutting just south of Birstall Park Lane bridge' when working on Contract No. 2 (Leake - Aylestone) built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton. The two crew stand on the locomotive which is dwarfed by the steam shovel/excavator behind. The locomotive appears to have a full head of steam as it is blowing-off from the safety valves.
