Lantern Slides Collection, Leicestershire Record Office

This series of lantern slides illustrates the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876. The expedition was sent by the British Admiralty to attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. It was led by Sir George Strong Nares and consisted of two ships, the Alert and the Discovery. Although the expedition failed to reach the North Pole it collected a large amount of scientific data and mapped extensive amounts of the coast around Greenland.

This slide is number 9 in the series and shows a dog sled crossing the Arctic terrain.
