The Cathedral Church of St Michael (commonly known as Coventry Cathedral) was built between the 14th and 15th centuries. In WW2 during the Coventry Blitz on 14 November 1940 the cathedral was hit by several incendiary devices and nearly completely destroyed. Only the tower, spire, the outer wall and the tomb/effigy of its first bishop survived. A new cathedral was built adjacent to the site, with the ruins being made into a garden of remembrance.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the new cathedral on 23rd March 1956. This series of photographs records their visit.
The priest in the centre of this photograph is RT Howard Provost of Coventry.
