Title
L1886 - Sherwood Rise tunnel and the cutting for Carrington Station
Description
L1886 - Photographed from the facade of Mansfield Road tunnel, this is a view of the short cutting that would later be the home of Carrington Station. When completed, the station had a platform on both sides of the cutting, making it one of only three Last Main Line stations not to be built to an 'island' design - where the permanent way ran either side of the station buildings and platform. Here, three lines of contractor's temporary railway ferry tipping wagons towards the entrance of Sherwood Rise tunnel. Note the steep walls of the cutting, created by the use of steam powered excavators.
