Title
L1700 - Building the girder bridge over the Midland Railway Station, Nottingham
Description
L1700 - Photograph showing the construction of the large 'bowstring' girder bridge that carried the London Extension over the Midland Railway's Station in Nottingham, as viewed from platform level circa 1897. The image captures an era of fierce railway competition, and the boundless Victorian faith in railway expansion, facts that would eventually result in the closure of the London Extension, and the demolition of this and many other traces of this optimistic enterprise. Note the two locomotives, possibly of Johnson design, awaiting their turn of duty on the Midland line. Logan & Hemingway were the contractors who built this section of the line (Contract No.1, Annesley to Leake).
