Title
L2322 - Steam shovel and navvies at work in Leicester
Description
L2322 - Work stops momentarily as navvies turn to pose for Newton's camera, thought to have been photographed at Leicester around 1897. This mighty steam powered excavator was one of forty three employed during the Line's construction. Its somewhat ramshackle timber shelter is a typical example of the improvised cabs which were fashioned by the contractors to protect both their men and machines from the elements. Henry Lovatt & Co. of Wolverhampton was the firm responsible for building this section of the Railway (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone).
