Title
L1200 - Brick Layers at work near St. Johns Wood
Description
L1200 - View of brick layers at work, possibly building a bridge, in the St. Johns Wood area of North London. In spite of being taken over one hundred years ago, the scene could quite easily be on any building site today. The St. Johns Wood area fell into the Canfield Place to Marylebone contract built by J. T. Firbank of London Bridge between 1894 and 1898, and most of the bricks would have been made on site. It was obviously very hot work as the brick layers' coats can be seen slung on the wall on the left. Note the old wooden wheelbarrows.
