Title
L1207 - Tunnel opening between Marlborough Road and Boundary Road, London
Description
L1207 - This highly detailed photograph shows the top of the tunnel opening between Marlborough Road and Boundary Road, just outside Marylebone Station. The tunnel would have been built by the 'cut & cover' method as opposed to being bored out. A temporary contractor's railway has been laid aver the top of the tunnel, and a steam crane or steam shovel can be seen at work. The contractor's rails do not look sturdy enough to take the weight of the crane/shovel. It looks as if someone had just 'downed tools' before the photograph was taken. This section of line formed part of Contract No. 7 (Canfield Place to Marylebone) and was built by J. T. Firbank of London Bridge.
