Title
L1099 - Narrow gauge 0-4-0 saddletank locomotive, LANCASHIRE WITCH.
Description
L1099 - Manning Wardle & Co. 3' gauge 'C' class 0-6-0 saddletank, LANCASHIRE WITCH, No. 614 of 1876. The photograph was taken on 15th July 1896 when the locomotive was being used to construct the station approach at Brackley in Northamptonshire. This was part of Contract No. 5 (Woodford to Brackley) built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Of the seven people posed on the locomotive, five of them are only boys. LANCASHIRE WITCH was the only narrow gauge locomotive used on the construction of the Great Central's London Extension. She had previously been owned by Logan & Hemingway before moving to Braddock & Matthews in Southport where she received her name.
