Description
L1023 - 0-6-0 saddletank, DEVONSHIRE, of Manning Wardle & Co. origin (No. 996 of 1886). The locomotive is seen with its three crew in the cab when working on Contract No. 2 (East Leake to Aylestone) at Rothley in Leicestershire. This section of line was built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton between 1894 and 1897. Coupled to the locomotive is a tipping wagon, and a navvy can be seen standing within. In the foreground of the picture is large concrete block and a wooden barrel.
