The Leicestershire and Rutland County Asylum was built in May 1837, and ceased operation in 1908. In 1914 it was designated a medical base for the Territorial Forces, providing medical treatment for injured soldiers. It expanded from this one building to a network of over 60 locations. The hospital closed in 1919, and opened in 1921 as part of the university- the building was gifted to the Council to form a 'living memorial' for the local men who lost their lives in the War.
