Stafford Henry Northcote (27 October 1818 - 12 January 1887) was the 1st Earl of Iddesleigh. He was a Conservative politician with a notable career in politics. At different times he held the position of President of the Board of Trade, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He worked under Gladstone and Disraeli.
This statue stands in Northernhay Gardens, by Exeter Castle. The inscription reads "Stafford Northcote Earl of Iddesleigh GCB1818-1887" and in Latin "Whenshall modesty and an uncorrupted fidelity, the sister of justice and naked trustfulness, to thee find any equal"
