David Papillon was a lawyer from Kent who represented New Romney and later Dover in Parliament from 1722 and 1741. According to folklore he kept a Spanish mistress at Papillon Hall in Lubenham. It was said she placed a curse on a pair of brocade shoes and that disaster would befall anyone who moved them from the Hall.
