Title
"Lemon Cup" bust improver, 1890 (around)
Description
The "Lemon Cup" bust improver from around 1890. From the outside this garment resembles two circular pads contained within a simple white cotton pouch. Inside, the pads reveal that they each contain a light, coiled spring packed into a pad of bleached horsehair. The springs are riveted strips of whalebone that run horizontally across each pad.

When the garment was pinned over a corset, or into a shift or camisole, the breasts would push the whalebone into a deep outward curve and force the spring out into the pad to give the impression of a larger, more generous bust.
