Title
Avro bust bodice, 1928: Side view
Description
Side view of a bust bodice from 1928. It is part of Symington's Avro range and features the side lacing mechanism patented by Symington in 1925.

This mechanism was very successful and, at one time, a large production unit at the factory was dedicated to its making. It was incorporated into many different styles until 1970. According to the Symington company, this style was reputedly sold in almost every corset department in Britain.

The bodice is made from pink coutil and fastens with buttons down the centre front. The wide shoulder straps are made from elastic, which helped make the garment more comfortable to wear. This style continued unchanged until the Utility scheme was introduced in 1941 when the fabric used was changed from coutil to a very strong cotton drill.
