The 5th Northern General Hospital was based in what is now known as the Fielding Johnson Building of Leicester University. The building was originally an asylum, though it ceased operation in 1908. In 1914 it was designated a medical base for the Territorial Forces, providing medical treatment for injured soldiers. It expanded from this one building to a network of over 60 locations. The hospital closed in 1919, and opened in 1921 as part of the university- the building was gifted to the Council to form a 'living memorial' for the local men who lost their lives in the War.
