L1776 - View south from the portal of Catesby tunnel, circa 1897. For the many navvies who toiled in these wet and gloomy conditions beneath the Northamptonshire countryside, the completion of this 3000 yard tunnel must have been particularly satisfying. Visible beyond the tunnel mouth is the rear of a contractor's locomotive, and a brick arch overbridge still under construction.
