Description

L1696 - The construction of the Great Western & Great Central Joint Railway required the boring of a new tunnel at Saunderton in Buckinghamshire. He we see the completed tunnel portal looking rather conspicuous in the cleanly dressed and levelled cutting. A single line has been laid here as the double track diverged for a short distance before meeting up again a little further on. The tunnel was built by Mackay & Davies of Cardiff between 1901 and 1905, as part of the alternative route into London.
