Title
L3042 - Spoil tipping in Whetstone
Description
L3042 - A fascinating photograph, taken around 1897 just south of the Whetstone to Littlethorpe road. Looking in a somewhat precarious position, an 0-4-0 contractor's locomotive - no doubt operating on hastily laid temporary rails - has manoeuvred a wagon laden with spoil to the edge of a tip slope. Seen at this stage, it is quite hard to imagine this prodigious earthwork bearing a Great Central express engine bound for London.
