Title
L3071 - Railway cutting at the joining of Contracts, Aylestone
Description
L3071 - A man poses for Newton's camera from the end of the permanent way trackbed. Its sudden end, and the contrasting progress of the bare cutting floor in the foreground, can be explained by the fact that this photograph was taken from the point at which two of the seven Last Main Line Contracts met. It is not known which is which, but here Contract No.2 (Leake to Aylestone built by Henry Lovatt & Co.) joined Contract No.3 (Aylestone to Rugby built by Topham, Jones & Railton).
