Title
L1401 - Carrington Station site, Nottingham
Description
L1401 - Trains departing Nottingham Victoria Station for the north would travel through two long tunnels to get out of the city. The first of these was Mansfield Road Tunnel, after which the trains would enter a short cutting before diving into Sherwood Rise Tunnel. Here we see that short cutting, which would eventually be home to Carrington Station. The tunnel bore ahead of the camera is the southern portal of Sherwood Rise Tunnel, which still has its centring in place and is some way off completion. The lightly laid contractor's rails running into the tunnel make it look more like a mine shaft than a main line railway tunnel. Note the mud encrusted wagon on the left of the picture. Both tunnels were part of Contract No. 1 (Annesley to East Leake) built by Logan & Hemingway between 1894 and 1899.
