Title
L3127 - Navvy Mission Room near Catesby, Northamptonshire
Description
L3127 - At this temporary building - an unlikely site for religious instruction - the navvies and their families could attend the services, readings and Sunday School conducted by a lay preacher of the Navvy Mission Society. The man on crutches is a Mr. Birch. Perhaps he sustained his injury whilst at work on the nearby Catesby tunnel, for in spite of the significantly better working conditions which existed at the end of the nineteenth century, tunnel construction undoubtedly remained one of the most hazardous tasks a navvy could undertake.
