Title
L1233 - Cutting and overbridge at Birstall, Leicester
Description
L1233 - Navvies pause for a moment at a cutting 'South of Birstall to Thurcaston Road', Leicester, circa 1897 (S. W. A. Newton's notes). It is clear from the photograph that the tracks on the left of the picture are temporary rails laid by the contractor, and those on the right are the permanent way. Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton was the contractor who built this section of the Railway (Contract No. 2, Leake to Aylestone). Note the three arch overbridge in the background.
