Title
L1241 - Cutting and overbridge at Helmdon, Northamptonshire
Description
L1241 - 'Trimming gang on Helmdon cutting' (S. W. A. Newton's notes) working next to a three arch overbridge, part of Contract No. 5, Woodford to Brackley built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne. The photograph was taken on 31st July 1897, and it is an excellent example of the large numbers of men required to form cuttings and embankments, even at a time when contractors were using steam powered excavators.
