Title
L2960 - Navvy on a footpath in Leicestershire
Description
L2960 - Thought to have been captured in Leicestershire around 1897, a navvy stops on a footpath to pose for Newton's camera. Typically, the man is holding a straw pantry, a soft bag which would contain food and other provisions. Throughout the age of railway construction, it would not have been uncommon to see navvies wandering across the countryside, as they 'tramped' from place to place in search of work.
