Title
L3017 - Steam navvy near Woodford
Description
L3017- Photographed on a winter's day near Woodford, Northamptonshire, a Ruston built steam navvy waits on a section of contractor's temporary railway. Forty three of these formidable machines were employed during the Line's construction. They were used primarily for shifting the millions of tons of rock and soil required to form cuttings and embankments, although this particular model has been temporarily converted for use as a steam crane. The makeshift cab is a typical modification, made by the contractor to afford the men and machine some protection from the elements.
