Title
L2879 - Catesby tunnel shaft and engine room
Description
L2879 - A view up the slope towards the precarious looking headgear that lay at the top of tunnel no. 9, one of many vertical shafts that were bored for the construction of Catesby tunnel. From here, tubs of bricks and various materials would be lowered to the men at work beneath the surface, who would in turn send them back to the top laden with spoil and other waste. The wooden hut on the right housed the steam engine that operated the winch. According to S. W. A. Newton's original notes, this was the 'new' engine house - the previous one having been destroyed by fire.
