Title
L1165 - Retaining Wall and Houses
Description
L1165 - Picture of the new brick built retaining wall on the station approaches, looking towards London. This section of railway was part of the Great Western & Great Central Joint line - the 'alternative route', and this section was constructed by Pauling & Co. of Westminster between 1901 and 1905. Of interest in this photo are the existing railway tracks which are the old broad gauge lines (7' '' between the rails), narrowed in to the standard 4' 8'' gauge. Note the large grinding wheel by the wall and 'The Porter's Arms' public house on the left.
