Title
L3286 - Navvy gang at work laying track
Description
L3286 - Another of S. W. A. Newton's posed photographs of navvies at work. The gang of fourteen is pictured in the process of laying lengths of rail that will make up one of the lightly laid contractors' railways. The flat-bottomed rails are laid onto nothing more than split logs and are fixed into place using hammered in dog spikes. The rails are attached to one another by means of 'fish plates' which are fixed into place using the holes seen here on the rail ends. The man on the left is probably a foreman of some sort, and behind him is one of the numerous steam shovels that were used on the construction of the London Extension and the other route via High Wycombe. Unfortunately the location of this image is unclear, although it is thought to be in the vicinity of Haddenham on the Great Western & Great Central Joint line.
