Description
L2874 - A navvy watchman poses for Newton's camera in front of the headgear and pumping engines at shaft no. 3a, taken during the construction of Catesby tunnel in August 1896. It was in tubs such as the one lying by this timber scaffold that many of the thirty million bricks required for the tunnel were lowered to the navvies at work beneath the surface.
