Taken at a stage of construction that is seldom seen, photographs such as this are a fine illustration of just how much the landscape was transformed by Britain's railways. Note the well dressed young man nearest to the camera: could it be a friend of Newton who is accompanying him on one his repeated excursions, or is it just another interested observer'
