Title
L1045 - Contractors' 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive, BROCKENHURST.
Description
L1045 - R W Hawthorn's of Newcastle-on-Tyne 0-6-0 saddletank, BROCKENHURST, pictured in a built up area of West Hampstead, London. BROCKENHURST was working on Contract No. 7 (Canfield Place to Marylebone), constructed by J T Firbank of London Bridge between 1894 and 1899. The picture shows the two man crew standing on the footplate and front buffer beam. Standing on the track is a railway worker carrying a shunter's pole and a well dressed gentleman, possibly a foreman. The builder's plate on the side of the engine has been engraved 'HAWTHORNE, NEWCASTLE on TYNE - ENGINEERS'. Note: the drab Victorian buildings in the background with the multitude of chimneys.
