L2827 - This wonderful snapshot of bridge construction is thought to have been taken near Shawell in March 1897. The centrings would provide the profile for the three brick arches, and once the structure began to take shape these timber frames would be removed. Visible along the cutting is a brick arch bridge that has already been completed. Note the wooden cab of the steam navvy that is at work on this undulating section of contractor's temporary railway.
