Title
L2832 - Interior of a navvy hut at Calvert
Description
L2832 - As this photograph testifies, navvy accommodation had seen radical changes during the Victorian era. Instead of the squalid, communal 'shanties' that had been endured for much of the nineteenth century, the navvies at work on the London Extension were housed in hutted camps erected by the contractors. That said, this particular example of a hut near Calvert, complete with chaise longue, carpet and a fine chest of drawers, would not have been home to an ordinary navvy, but rather a high ranking member of the construction team.
