Title
L2422 - Steam navvy at work in Nottingham
Description
L2422 - A Ruston steam navvy at work in the centre of Nottingham, photographed around 1897. Although crude in appearance, these powerful excavators were an invaluable asset for the contractors building the Last Main Line. Following their introduction around twenty years before, steam navvies had reduced the cost of excavation by more than 80%. Note the horse drawn tipping wagon being used on the temporary railway.
