Title
Avro Topliner girdle, 1960
Description
Avro Topliner girdle of 1960 with characteristic ivy leaf design. A white, step-in girdle produced by Symington as part of their Liberty brand of foundationwear.
The girdle belonged to the "Topliner" collection, a range carefully designed by the company to fit the basic figure types, which was launched with a special marketing scheme. The collection included six step-in girdles and a corselet.
This girdle is an average figure style and features the characteristic ivy leaf design, which has been machine stitched onto the front faille satin panel. The side panels and inset were designed to fit around the figure and are made from "lenolast" elastic. This was a special material featuring light tension rubber threads. These helped control the figure.
The girdle is fastened at the front with a off-centre zip for easier fitting. The zip is plush lined to ensure greater comfort for the wearer.
